Santa Monica Boulevard Median

Commissioned by the Comstock Hill Homeowners Association, this 16,500 square foot project reinvigorates and renews the Santa Monica Boulevard median across from the Century City shopping center.

The existing plane trees were retained, and dwarf mat rushes were introduced in curves around them, forming the backbone of the design. These undulations create pockets for alternating plantings of blue chalk sticks and stonecrop. Additional succulent accents were added to produce pops of color at different times of the year.

To promote biological diversity in this dense urban site, half of the species selected are native to California and include coast live oak, desert willow and California blue grama grass.

Urban Water Group worked with the staff of Councilperson Koretz’s office and the City of Los Angeles Urban Forestry Division and Bureau of Street Services to secure approvals and permits.
